Special Interests
As a preschool intervention specialist, 50% of my class are students on IEPs and the other 50% are peer role models. I love our inclusivity. We have students with a wide range of abilities and we all come together to make one happy (well in preschool usually someone is always in their feels) family.
I have worked with tons of kiddos on the Autism spectrum over the years. And a lot of times with this population, they have very unique interests. Which I LOVE!
A non-exhaustive lists of these interests include
Fans, drawing fans, looking at fans, building fans
Movie logos (Pixar, Dreamworks, Etc.)
Anatomy- This 4 year old could tell you all about the digestive system. They also created an art piece and told me it was “The pubic bone”.
Cylinders- The excitement this child had when we brought in a huge wrapping paper roll
Little figurines- For example, a miniature leg lamp from The Christmas Story
Pointy items- Such as grass, mulch
Romance book covers- A mom of one of my former students told me this is their latest interest. I love it.
And of course letters and numbers
